Hundreds Displaced in Kenya's Kisumu After Heavy Downpour

Hundreds of families have been displaced in Kisumu following heavy rains in the region since last week, reports Ojwang Joe for Capital FM.

Families in Nyalenda, Nyamasaria and Manyatta slept in the cold after rivers burst their banks, officials have said.

The Auji, Wigwa and Nyamasaria rivers that drain into Lake Victoria, overflowed during the night-long torrential rains.

Efforts are underway to evacuate locals who were marooned.

Those evacuated are currently putting up in local schools and churches which are on higher grounds.

In March 2023, at least seven people were killed in flash floods at Oljorai area, Gilgil following heavy rains.

The heavy rains come as over 4 million people in 23 counties are facing starvation with another 846,000 in nine additional counties in need of assistance due to drought.
